Core symbols
- Driving time - time spent driving a vehicle subject to tachograph rules.
- Other work - non-driving duties such as loading, cleaning, paperwork, or checks.
- Availability - waiting time when you must be ready to resume driving or other work.
- Breaks and rest - breaks and daily/weekly rest periods.
Other work vs availability
Other work is active duty for the employer. Availability is waiting time when the duration is known in advance and you are not required to stay at the workstation, but must be ready to respond.
Examples (high level)
- Loading/unloading, vehicle checks, and paperwork are other work.
- Waiting at a terminal or frontier with a known expected duration is availability.
- Time in a bunk while the vehicle is moving (team driving) is typically availability.
- Breaks and daily rest are recorded as rest.
Always follow the current EU rules and local guidance on how symbols should be used for your operation.
